The STOA (Science and Technology Options Assessment) workshop “The future of European research: integrity, freedom, and trust” will take place on 10 June 2026 at the European Parliament in Brussels. The event will address research ethics, academic freedom and public trust, as well as policy measures to strengthen research integrity across Europe.

According to ALLEA (the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities) European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity - which the European Commission uses as guidance for Horizon Europe projects - research integrity implies the research community’s responsibility to formulate principles, define proper criteria for research conduct, and maximise the quality, reliability and resilience of research and its outputs.

Addressing integrity issues requires a systemic perspective, since current challenges - the influence of social media, the rise in publications and funding applications, threats to academic freedom, and the rapid development of artificial intelligence - create significant risks to the integrity of the research process and to public trust in science. The seminar will discuss how policy can adapt to foster a culture of integrity across the European Research Area.

Signe Mežinska (University of Latvia) will present “Insights from the BEYOND project,” offering findings and recommendations to strengthen research integrity and inform policy.

Registration for the event is open until 4 June HERE.
