Gastroenterologist Olga Sjomina-Gubareva successfully defended her doctoral thesis "Towards safer and more effective Helicobacter pylori infection eradication regimens" and received the degree of Doctor of Science (Ph.D.) in Medicine and Health Sciences, Clinical Medicine, Internal Medicine Sub-discipline.

The doctoral thesis was developed on the basis of the GISTAR study, which is one of the longest-running studies in the history of medicine in Latvia and is led by the Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine of the University of Latvia under the leadership of Professor Mārcis Leja.

Olga Sjomina-Gubareva's doctoral thesis is a significant contribution to gastroenterology, as its goal is to identify effective and safe Helicobacter pylori eradication therapies associated with minimal risk of side effects and limited long-term impact on the intestinal microbiome. The results of the study provide essential information about new therapies that can improve the quality of life of patients.

"The results of the work will be integrated into international guidelines for gastric cancer screening," emphasized O. Sjomina-Gubareva.

Her work offers hope for new, improved solutions for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection, offering greater safety and efficacy to patients worldwide.
