The Ministry of Health held a virtual and in-person event on the project "Improving cancer care coordination and screening in Latvia and Slovakia" (ICCCS), where experts in the field of cancer screening, oncologists and researchers informed about the achieved results.
The ICCCS project is a unique partnership between the Directorate General for Structural Reform Support of the European Commission, IARC and the Ministry of Health of Latvia. The project is financed by the European Union through the Technical Support Instrument. The Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine of the University of Latvia coordinated this project since 2022.
"Although we still face significant problems in cancer registration and cancer screening in Latvia, and the largest oncology hospital has just started the cancer center accreditation process, the project has marked significant changes in cancer care in the country. Internationally accepted criteria have been introduced in cancer registration, but the future strategy includes the goal of moving towards the accreditation of a Comprehensive Cancer Center. Its implementation phase has been started during the life of this project. We expect that the results of the project will help save many lives in the years to come," emphasizes Mārcis Leja, director of the Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine of the University of Latvia and head of the ICCCS project in Latvia.
The project is supported by the General Directorate (DG REFORM).
