As the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Latvia's independence approaches, the President of Latvia and the Chapter of Orders have awarded the country's highest state decoration – the Order of the Three Stars – to Professor Mārcis Leja, Director of the Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences, University of Latvia, a member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, and a renowned gastroenterologist.

Recipients of the Order of the Three Stars represent a wide array of fields, recognized for their conscientious professional work and meaningful contributions to society on a national scale. These are individuals whose active civic stance, courage, and selflessness strengthen our Latvia and are worthy of the highest national recognition and honor. They are people whose talent and creative accomplishments have earned broad international acclaim and contribute significantly to shaping Latvia's image in the world.

We are proud that the contribution of our Institute’s Director, Professor Mārcis Leja, to science and education—particularly in the field of early cancer detection and screening—has been recognized with this prestigious award.

Professor Leja’s scientific achievements, his leadership in international projects, and his active participation in various European and global scientific organizations make him one of Latvia's and the world’s most prominent scientists.

The official award ceremony for the highest state decoration is scheduled for May 4, 2025, at 15:00 at Riga Castle, in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the restoration of the Republic of Latvia’s independence. The ceremony will be broadcast live on Latvian Television Channel 1.
